Beautifully decorated board with seven colourful cogs. The cogs come in two sizes so there is a bit of interchangeability but the big ones, at least, are colour-coded.  It's fascinating watching how turning one cog turns them all - appeals to the curious child in me.  From an engineering point of view, please be aware that the cogs, being wood, don't always turn perfectly smoothly as plastic or metal ones would. Our demo one can stick a bit especially if someone has switched the cogs around.

Usually they are strictly adult-assembly items held together by a handful or two of metal screws.  I like this because the child itself can help screw it together using the big chunky wooden screws that he/she can twist in by hand - no screwdrivers here. It's good and sturdy and comes with the usual tools, a vice and plenty of wooden nuts and bolts.
